I thought about buying a book about decluttering and then remembered I already have several cluttering up on my bookshelf! I know what I need to do and that I need to do it my way and fit it in with my life or, as previous attempts have proved, I just won't achieve my goal!
Thinking about my past dalliances with household organisation I can identify several obstacles that seem to get me every time:
Time: Not giving myself enough time to get the whole job done, or attempting too much in the time available means I end up shoving the leftover mess somewhere to 'deal with later'. Obviously this doesn't happen and the disorganisation grow from there!
Boredom: After pulling out the entire contents of any given room with much enthusiasm after a few hours it's not so exciting!
Scale: Sometimes when a job seems too big/daunting I can put myself off!
1. One room at a time.
2. One cupboard/drawer/area at a time.
3. Never try to do more than can be done in the time available
Deep breaths.................lets get started!

That sounds exactly like me and I really want to have a bit of a spring clean in time well for spring! I had heard that's it's best to start from the upstairs and work down so my plan is to tackle our bedroom first but only one job at a time so should it be the boxes under the bed or the boxes above the wardrobe??? Deep breaths!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good plan to me! Could I also recommend you look up FlyLady - she really helps to get your housework on track so that eventually you're only doing a tiny bit every day to keep on top of everything. I'm in the throes of following her routines at the moment and it's really helping me.

Sounds like you have the right idea this time!
ReplyDeleteAs you know I'm doing up the front room so I'm doing bits and pieces... a bit of decluttering.. then taking some photos of things to eBay.. then listing them... mixing it up so I'm not doing too much of one thing and like you say get bored or overwhelmed!
Sticking to a draw here and there makes the job more manageable and as you know eBay is a mammoth job in itself so makes sense to do little and often!
Good luck!

Hi Kelly,
ReplyDeleteI am following this rule of one room at the time to declutter the house this year too. I tend to think to much about the whole thing and I am educating myself to think one step at the time.
So far the process is going much better and more satisfying.
Loving your new blog.

I love de-cluttering and I do it twice a year. I am also a list maker so this helps in the task of de-cluttering. I will follow your journey and hope to be with you at the winning line.
ReplyDeleteTake care, keep safe, be happy

Sounds like a good plan to me, I sorted out my baking cupboard, purchased some nice plastic storage boxes and now have a very tidy cupboard with everthing I need to hand, a small thing I know but at least I have made a start, you'd have been proud of the amount of stuff I threw away (most of it out of date!)Looking forward to seeing your results.
